Non-Profit Poster Project Mary Anderson

Anderson-Mary-Non-Profit Project REAL real

I chose to make a poster for The Diversity Coalition organization. It was spearheaded by Bethann Hardison, Naomi Campbell, and Iman. They are all legendary supermodels who broke racial and class barriers. Recently, they noticed that there’s been a lack of diversity on the runways, prompting them to send a letter to major designers encouraging them to hire more models of color.

I chose the “Whites Only” text to resemble the “Whites Only” signs during the Jim Crow era. It’s supposed to make people think twice about the lack of diversity within fashion, rather than be passive. I increased the kerning on the text on the arm of the sunglasses to resemble how high-end brands often kern their text.

I didn’t put an abundance of text, because not many fashion advertisements have lots of text. I placed the quote near the model’s eye to form a straight line of vision from her to the text, and to directly deliver the message. I also placed info about the organization near the bottom, so it wouldn’t occupy too much of the space of the poster, and still keep it open and airy overall.
